All three voted to get dark money out of politics and protect the right to vote
End Citizens United // Let America Vote (ECU // LAV) announced three new endorsements today as part of the group’s efforts to re-elect members of the Democratic House majority committed to limiting the influence of big money in politics and protecting the freedom to vote.
The three frontline members of Congress include Reps. Carolyn Bourdeaux (GA-07), Angie Craig (MN-02), and Haley Stevens (MI-11). All three members of Congress have established themselves as leaders when it comes to fighting corruption in Washington and ensuring every American has the freedom to vote. Each member voted for the For the People Act (H.R. 1/S. 1) and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R. 4), two critical pieces of legislation that will protect the freedom to vote, fight back against the corrupting influence of dark money in our elections, and eliminate partisan gerrymandering.
“As we get ready to help defend the Democratic House majority, it is crucial that we re-elect these members of Congress who have been vital in the fight against dark money special interests and protecting the right to vote,” said End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller. “Thanks to their leadership and advocacy, we were able to pass anti-corruption and voting rights legislation through the House. We look forward to seeing them all re-elected next November.”
”When I ran for Congress I promised not to take corporate PAC money because our leaders should be responsive to the people in their district — not powerful special interests. I am honored to receive this endorsement and continue fighting to fix our broken campaign finance system, roll back the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, and get special interest money out of politics,” said Congresswoman Carolyn Bourdeaux.
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of End Citizens United // Let America Vote, who stood by my side as dark money groups spent nearly $2 million against me last year,” said Congresswoman Haley Stevens. “Our grassroots movement of hardworking Michiganders welcomes their support as we prepare to again stand up to the deep-pocketed special interests who are already planning to spend millions more against me next year.”
“Since the day I was sworn in, End Citizens United has been a tireless advocate and trusted partner in our work to restore the American people’s faith in their elected officials by combatting corruption and ending the era of big money in our politics,” said Representative Angie Craig. “I am incredibly proud to accept this endorsement – and eternally grateful for all the work this crucial organization does to strengthen our democracy and protect the right to vote.”
ECU // LAV raised and spent $65.5 million in the 2020 election cycle. Its $12.5 million independent expenditure made it the 4th largest issue group spending on the Democratic side. ECU // LAV’s members raised $9.5 million directly for endorsed candidates and state ballot measures. The group also donated nearly $2.5 million directly to its endorsed campaigns.
ECU // LAV merged in 2020. The group is dedicated to combating the two biggest challenges facing our democracy: the corrosive impact of Big Money and attempts to block access to the ballot box. ECU led the effort to flip the House in 2018 by supporting pro-reform candidates that stood up to Big Money special interests. In 2020, ECU // LAV led the fight to protect all Americans’ right to vote, and played a pivotal role in electing anti-corruption Senate candidates that helped flip the chamber. ECU // LAV has more than four million members nationwide.
