End Citizens United // Let America Vote Endorses Senators Duckworth and Murray for Re-Election

Sep 09, 2021

End Citizens United // Let America Vote today endorsed Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), who have both been critical in the fight to protect voting rights and limit the influence of big money in politics. The endorsements are part of the group’s efforts to elect candidates committed to getting special interest money out of politics and protecting the freedom to vote and holding the Democratic Senate majority.

Both Senators Duckworth and Senator Murray are co-sponsors of the For the People Act, a crucial anti-corruption and voting rights bill that would get dark money out of politics, protect the freedom to vote, and eliminate partisan gerrymandering.

“As we prepare to defend the Senate Democratic majority, it is so important that we re-elect Senator Duckworth and Senator Murray. Both have been vital to Senate Democrats’ efforts to remove the influence of dark money in our politics and ensure every American has access to the ballot box,” said End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller. “We look forward to seeing both of these courageous Senators re-elected next year.”

“Now more than ever, we need to fight loud and hard for every person’s right to be heard at the ballot box–not drowned out by special interests, the very wealthiest, or backwards, extreme laws designed to keep Americans from exercising their right to vote,” said Senator Murray. “Our democracy is at stake, and I’m proud to be in this fight with End Citizens United/Let America Vote.”

“As Republicans work to pass hundreds of voter suppression bills across the nation and make it significantly harder for BIPOC Americans, Americans with disabilities and others to vote, let me be clear: our democracy is stronger when everyone participates,” said Senator Duckworth. “Passing federal legislation that protects every American’s right to vote, gets big money out of politics and safeguards our democracy remains as important as ever, and I’m proud to receive this endorsement today.”

ECU // LAV raised and spent $65.5 million in the 2020 election cycle. Its $12.5 million independent expenditure made it the 4th largest issue group spending on the Democratic side. ECU // LAV’s members raised $9.5 million directly for endorsed candidates and state ballot measures. The group also donated nearly $2.5 million directly to its endorsed campaigns.

ECU // LAV merged in 2020. The group is dedicated to combating the two biggest challenges facing our democracy: the corrosive impact of Big Money and attempts to block access to the ballot box. ECU led the effort to flip the House in 2018 by supporting pro-reform candidates that stood up to Big Money special interests. In 2020, ECU // LAV led the fight to protect all Americans’ right to vote, and played a pivotal role in electing anti-corruption Senate candidates that helped flip the chamber. ECU // LAV has more than four million members nationwide.
