Companion bills introduced in Senate and House by Senator Whitehouse (D-RI) and Congressman Cicilline (D-RI)
End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on introduction of the 2023 DISCLOSE Act:
“Americans deserve to know who is trying to influence their elections. The billions in dark money flooding our elections allows the rich and powerful to buy politicians who will work for them, drowning out the voices of everyday Americans. There’s no transparency and no accountability.
“The DISCLOSE Act is the antidote to this corrupt system. It will shine a light on the billionaires and corporate special interests pouring money into our elections to buy power and influence.
“We’re incredibly grateful to Senator Whitehouse and Congressman Cicilline for their tireless advocacy and leadership on this issue.”
The DISCLOSE Act:
-
Will shine a light on the flood of dark money in elections by requiring organizations that engage in electioneering – including super PACs and 501(c)(4) dark money groups – to disclose the identities of donors who have given them $10,000 or more during an election cycle.
-
Requires an organization that spends $10,000 or more on campaign expenditures to file a disclosure report with the Federal Election Commission within 24 hours of purchasing the expenditures.
-
Requires companies spending money in elections to disclose their true owners, so election officials and the public know who is behind the spending and stops foreign actors from meddling in our elections.
-
Is supported by 92% of voters.
