‘This decision completely undermines our democracy and threatens the fundamental freedoms that America was founded on’
End Citizens United // Let America Vote (ECU // LAV) President Tiffany Muller released the following statement after the Supreme Court released its decision on the Trump immunity case:
“This is one of the most disastrous Supreme Court decisions of our lifetime. By radically expanding the doctrine of presidential immunity, the court has shattered the foundational principle that no one is above the law. This decision is a clear attempt to delay justice and insulate Trump from facing the consequences of his actions.
“The far-right justices, many of whom were appointed by Trump himself, put their partisan loyalties over their duty to uphold justice. Justice Alito and Justice Thomas made their political biases known, yet there was no enforcement mechanism to force their recusal. Their refusal to step aside has tarnished the judiciary’s integrity and proved that justice in the Supreme Court is far from blind.
“This decision completely undermines our democracy and threatens the fundamental freedoms that America was founded on. We must stop Donald Trump in November or he’ll use these newfound privileges to follow through with his promises of being a dictator on day one.”
