End Citizens United // Let America Vote Statement on Black History Month

Feb 01, 2023

End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the start of Black History Month:

“February is a time to celebrate the legacy of the Black Americans who defied the odds and fought for peace, civil rights, opportunity, and equal treatment in a country that systemically undermines Black people.

“The civil rights movement removed many electoral obstacles that silenced the voice of Black voters, and yet protecting the freedom to vote is still a struggle in the fight for equality and racial justice. Ensuring every American can participate in our democracy means finally giving a voice to the residents of Washington D.C., who pay federal taxes, but lack Congressional voting power. From gerrymandered districts to anti-voter laws, it’s more important than ever to empower our democracy so every Black American can trust their voices, and lives, matter.

“The recent murder of Tyre Nichols, and the countless Black lives lost due to systemic police brutality, serves as a painful reminder of why demanding justice for Black lives also means a fight for the voices of Black voters.

“During the course of this Black History Month, while honoring the countless Black leaders who helped build a more inclusive and diverse democracy, we recommit to this historic fight for racial justice and equality for every American so we can live up to one of this country’s fundamental values: we all have the freedom to have a voice in our democracy.”
