End Citizens United (ECU) announced today that its network of grassroots members have contributed $100,000 in small-dollar donations, with an average contribution of $8.00, for Hiral Tipirneni since endorsing her in March. The news comes on the heels that Tipirneni outraised her opponent Debbie Lesko in the latest FEC filing for the April 24th special election without taking a dime of corporate PAC money.
“Hiral has energized the grassroots because she is putting people, not special interests, first in her campaign,” said Tiffany Muller, president of End Citizens United. “Arizona families deserve a Congresswoman who represents their interests and voters know they’ll get exactly that with Dr. Tipirneni.”
Hiral’s opponent, Debbie Lesko, has already come under fire for trying to skirt election laws. In early March, the Campaign Legal Center filed an FEC complaint against her for illegally moving $50,000 from her state campaign to a federal super PAC supporting her, despite requirements that state campaign funds not be used to fund a federal race.
ECU’s grassroots network has played a vital role in the 2017 and 2018 special elections. In PA-18, ECU was the first national group to endorse Conor Lamb, raising over $300,000 directly for Lamb and spending an additional $250,000 on television and digital ads. ECU also played an important role in the Alabama special election, endorsing Doug Jones early on and raising over $600,000 in small-dollar donations to his campaign.
