End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on news that Senator Susan Collins officially filed for re-election:
“It’s fitting that Senator Collins has announced her re-election campaign two years after voting to pass the disastrous GOP tax bill and give almost $2 trillion to the corporate special interests that donate to her.
“After voting for the GOP tax bill, threatening Mainers’ Social Security and Medicare, and confirming Brett Kavanaugh, Senator Collins lacks homegrown support. She’s turning to big money to fund her campaign. Mainers have had enough and they know Senator Collins no longer has their back.
“Meanwhile, Sara Gideon is running a grassroots campaign that relies on small-dollar donors and refuses donations from corporate PACs. She’s making anti-corruption and government reform central to her campaign, proving that she’s listening to Mainers’ concerns. Mainers want representation that can’t be bought and that’s exactly what they’ll get in Sara Gideon. End Citizens United stands with Sara, and we look forward to helping her win.”
ECU endorsed Sara Gideon in July because of her commitment to reform and making Washington work for Mainers. Gideon, who rejects donations from corporate PACs, is running a grassroots campaign powered by small-dollar donors. ECU has conducted extensive polling and research showing that voters across the political spectrum support getting big money out of politics. ECU is a traditional political action committee (PAC) with more than four million members, including 21,700 in Maine. The reform group is entirely grassroots-funded with an average donation of just $14.
