Washington, DC –– Today, Ranking Member Rodney Davis (IL-13) of the Committee on House Administration (CHA) helped lead the Republican opposition against a bill that would strengthen election security. H.R. 2722 includes provisions that would strengthen the integrity of U.S. elections and crack down on foreign interference.
“Following in the footsteps of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Rep. Rodney Davis is doing everything he can in the House to undermine a commonsense bill that would strengthen the integrity of our elections. We know our election infrastructure needs to be modernized and secured, but instead of working to do what’s needed, Rodney Davis continues to put party over country,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “Americans’ faith in government is at an all-time low, but our energy and enthusiasm to fix the system is a force that cannot be stopped by Rep. Davis or any other Washington politician.”
In March, the House passed the most comprehensive anti-corruption and reform bill since Watergate, the For the People Act (H.R.1). The bill in today’s CHA Markup would build off of the provisions laid out in H.R. 1 by:
-
Requiring paper ballots
-
Authorizing $600 million in election security funding this year and $175 million every federal election year after that
-
Requiring all voting machines be manufactured in the U.S.
-
Making express prohibitions on wireless ballot box technology
A poll End Citizens United Action Fund conducted last August shows that 86% of Americans support election security legislation, with 67% saying they strongly support measures to strengthen the U.S. election system.
