Passing one of the most egregious anti-voter laws in the country last year – that is already silencing voters’ voices and removing trusted local election officials – wasn’t enough for self-serving Georgia GOP politicians. They are now trying to ram through yet another restrictive voter law in an effort to limit the freedom to vote and sabotage our elections.
The new bill, HB 1464, would exacerbate the defunding of local election offices, taking power away from trusted local election officials and putting it in the hands of partisan politicians. The bill would also restrict the ability for voters to make their voices heard, particularly in communities of color, and would allow for increased voter intimidation and criminalization by giving the state Bureau of Investigation jurisdiction to investigate election cases. HB 1464 also makes it easier for partisan politicians to further undermine faith in our democracy by initiating fake ballot reviews that perpetuate the Big Lie which led to the deadly January 6 insurrection.
This attack on the freedom to vote makes it harder for Georgians to use their voice and make change on the issues they care about most. It is a cynical and dangerous bill that must not be passed into law.
