Georgia’s New Anti-Voter Bill Threatens the Freedom to Vote and Undermines Faith in Elections

Mar 16, 2022

End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller released the following statement after the Georgia House of Representatives passed HB 1464, an egregious and dangerous anti-voter bill:

“Passing one of the worst restrictive voter laws in the country last year wasn’t enough for the self-serving Republican politicians in the Georgia legislature. At the last minute, they’ve now passed yet another disastrous bill that will block access to the ballot box, undermine faith in our democracy, and allow for intimidation of Georgia voters trying to make their voices heard. As State Rep. Bee Nguyen said, this bill will sabotage the work of trusted local election officials and defund already cash-strapped election offices.

“This new bill will further allow for increased voter intimidation and criminalization by giving the state Bureau of Investigation jurisdiction to investigate election cases. HB 1464 also makes it easier for partisan politicians to further undermine faith in our democracy by initiating fake ballot reviews that perpetuate the Big Lie which led to the deadly January 6 insurrection, and makes it harder for local election offices to receive critical funding to run elections in a fair and effective manner.

“Georgians deserve elected officials like State Sen. Jen Jordan and State Rep. Bee Nguyen in key election offices like the Attorney General and Secretary of State, respectively, who will fight to protect their voice from anti-voter laws like these, restore trust in our elections, and listen to the will of the people, not self-serving politicians shamelessly passing bills like HB 1464 that undercut our democracy.

“Governor Brian Kemp must stick to his promise that there would be no more changes to Georgia’s election laws this year and veto this bill. The freedom to vote in Georgia is already in danger, and passing this bill into law would only serve to further prevent hard-working Georgians from making change on the issues that matter most to them.”
