GOP Continues Nominating Election Deniers for AG & SOS Races

Jun 15, 2022

More than 100 election deniers have won GOP nominations this cycle

The growing anti-democratic effort underscores the importance of SOS & AG races this cycle

Last night, Nevada Republicans nominated Sigal Chattah for Attorney General and Jim Marchant for Secretary of State. Chattah is a conspiracy theorist with significant ties to the criminal conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 election and silence the voice of the people. Marchant is a member of an extremist group that takes direction from QAnon conspiracy theorists and is trying to sabotage future elections.

Across the country, in GOP primaries for Secretary of State and Attorney General, the movement to nominate election-denying conspiracy theorists is moving ahead at an alarming rate. A recent analysis from the Washington Post found that through the first third of the primaries, over 100 election-denying GOP candidates won their party’s nomination.

“Between Kristina Karamo and Matt DePerno in Michigan, Ken Paxton in Texas, Doug Mastriano in Pennsylvania, and now Sigal Chattah and Jim Marchant in Nevada, the GOP continues to promote dangerous candidates who want to sabotage elections for their political allies, throw out legally cast ballots, and silence the voice of the people,” said End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller.

The disastrous effects of having election deniers in office are already playing out in New Mexico, where a County Commission led by conspiracy theorists is refusing to certify the results of the primary election, threatening to silence the voice of the thousands of voters who cast a ballot in the June primary. These developments continue to underscore the importance of having Secretaries of State who will protect the freedom to vote.

End Citizens United // Let America Vote has endorsed 11 candidates for Secretary of State and Attorney General offices as part of the Democracy Defenders program—a national initiative to support Democratic attorney general and secretary of state candidates in battleground states across the country.
