Gov. Ron DeSantis Signs Georgia-Style Voter Suppression Law to Restrict Floridians’ Freedom to Vote

May 06, 2021

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on Governor Ron DeSantis’ signing of S.B. 90, which restricts mail ballot drop boxes, makes it harder for Flordians to vote by mail, and criminalizes certain people for giving water to voters who may be standing in line for hours. DeSantis barred members of the media, with the exception of Fox News, from covering his signing of the bill.

“Governor DeSantis’ signing of a voter suppression bill into law today is an egregious effort to follow Georgia in a race to the bottom by erecting barriers to voting so the Republican Party can assert power. S.B. 90 is one of several bills across the country that are becoming law because dark money forces want to hold onto power and are losing on the strength of their ideas. After record turnout in the 2020 election, DeSantis has moved to restrict Floridians’ access to the ballot for years to come.

“With each passing day, the urgency for the Senate to pass the For the People Act (H.R. 1/S. 1) to counteract this anti-democratic attack on the right to vote is increasingly critical. This bill will fight back against heinous voter suppression efforts being carried out across the country, stop billionaires from hand-picking politicians who are supposed to be elected by the American people, and put in place essential ethics reforms. It would reinstate protections for Floridians’ sacred right to vote. There is simply no other option: the Senate must pass the For the People Act now.”
