End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the House bill cutting corporate taxes at the expense of middle class families.
“House Republicans today took another step towards handing our democracy to their big donors. The GOP tax plan, which raises taxes on many middle and working class American families while lowering taxes for the wealthiest Americans, highlights Washington’s rigged system. We need to elect members of Congress who will fight for reform and get unlimited and secret special interest money out of politics so our government is responsive to the people.”
Here’s how it works in Washington, where politicians stack the deck in favor of the special interests:
Vox, Dylan Scott: House Republican: my donors told me to pass the tax bill “or don’t ever call me again”
“The Republican donor class — i.e., corporate and wealthy America — expects Republican lawmakers to pass a Republican tax bill. It’s as simple as that…So House Republicans aren’t going to sweat the details. Their donors put them in office to cut their taxes.”
CNN, Lauren Fox: Hill Republican dilemma: Dash to pass tax reform or face donor backlash
“Republicans aren’t hiding a key part of their motivation to pass tax reform in the weeks ahead: if they don’t do something — anything– the donor class could abandon them and imperil their chances of keeping the majority in 2018.”
Daily Beast, Lachlan Markey, Sam Stein: GOP Donors To GOP Lawmakers: Yeah. We Will Cut You Off Absent Tax Reform
“Congressional Republicans have warned in recent days that if the party fails to pass a massive package of tax cuts in the next year, their donors will desert them…Several GOP donors contacted by The Daily Beast said that they would either stop writing checks to the party or divert their money elsewhere should tax cuts end up being stalled.”
Salon, Matthew Sheffield: GOP donors threaten to withhold funds unless their agenda is passed
“If Republican politicians aren’t soon able to pass sufficiently conservative versions of healthcare and tax reform, more than a few right-leaning donors say they’re going to stop cutting fundraising checks, according to the Associated Press.
“Get Obamacare repealed and replaced, get tax reform passed,” Texas-based donor Doug Deason said, calling his donations a “Dallas piggy bank.”
