Lack of Quorum at the FEC Opens the Door to Corruption

May 01, 2025

End Citizens United (ECU) President Tiffany Muller issued the following statement on the Federal Election Commission’s (FEC) lack of quorum, which will prevent the agency from carrying out its ability to enforce campaign finance laws:

“Once again, the FEC––the agency tasked with enforcing campaign finance laws and rooting out corruption––has been deliberately gutted and left powerless. The lack of quorum opens the door to corruption in our elections and is a direct threat to our national security. As it stands, the FEC can’t take action on even the most basic and essential elements, like making rules, conducting audits, offering official guidance to political committees, and imposing fines.

“This isn’t accidental. With President Trump’s forced removal of Commissioner Weintraub, his contempt for campaign finance laws, and his refusal to nominate replacements, this is a calculated move to eliminate all accountability and dismantle safeguards in our elections.

“At a time when we’re seeing unprecedented money flood our elections, the Commission’s work is more important than ever. The American people deserve a fully functioning watchdog––not one that’s intentionally shut down to protect corrupt politicians and billionaire donors. President Trump must immediately nominate qualified candidates who are committed to upholding the law.”
