In May, House Democrats attempted to expel George Santos from Congress following an indictment by a federal grand jury on 13 criminal charges.
The effort failed as 221 Republicans shielded him from accountability. To them, preserving Speaker McCarthy’s razor-thin majority mattered more than doing right by families in the district.
One of the members who protected Santos is Congressman Nick LaLota.
LaLota, who made a big show by calling on Santos to resign in January and re-upped those calls in February, prevented the vote from even happening. He caved and stood in line with Speaker McCarthy when it mattered most. Santos personally thanked those who protected him.
In a statement on the day of the vote, LaLota said:
“While I would have preferred there to be enough votes to expel the sociopath scam artist, Congressman D’Esposito has spearheaded the next best option: To refer this matter to the Ethics Committee where we expect a result within 60 days and for the terrible liar to be gone, by resignation or expulsion, before August recess.”
“It’s August recess and George Santos is still in office, thanks to Congressman LaLota,” said End Citizens United Spokesperson Bawadden Sayed. “Behind LaLota’s facade of accountability is a congressman who lacks integrity. He’s nothing more than an excuse factory who shamelessly endorsed the Republicans’ indefensible move to keep Santos in power.”
