After ECU’s $1 million ad campaign, Coffman falls out of favor with independents
As Coffman loses support of independent voters, Crow gains 11 point lead; 49-38
Washington, DC — A new poll of likely voters, commissioned by End Citizens United (ECU) and conducted by Normington Petts, shows challenger Jason Crow taking the lead in CO-06 as independents sour on Rep. Mike Coffman, 49-38 percent. Click here to see the polling memo.
In ECU’s July poll, Crow was behind by three points, 44-41 percent. In this latest poll, which followed ECU’s nearly $1 million ad buy, Crow jumps to an 11-point lead.
The polling, conducted from September 18-23, follows ECU’s television ad “Reasons” as well as digital ads and direct mail. The ad campaign, which targeted independents, exposed Coffman for being in the pocket of the special interests and corporate PACs that have spent $17 million to keep him in Congress. It also highlighted Jason Crow’s decision to refuse corporate PAC money and put people ahead of special interests in his campaign.
Coffman’s job rating as a member of Congress has plummeted from 50 percent approval and 35 percent disapproval in July to 38 percent approval and 44 percent disapproval, a 21-point swing. Among independents, his job approval nosedived 28-points. Meanwhile, Crow’s favorable rating increased from 13 percent approval and 10 percent disapproval in July to 33 percent approval and 21 percent disapproval, including jumping to 30-17 percent among independents.
“Rep. Coffman’s decision to align himself with Donald Trump and side with the special interests that fund his campaign is coming back to haunt him,” said ECU President Tiffany Muller. “Voters are fed up with being ignored by Mike Coffman, so it’s no wonder he’s falling out favor with them. Jason Crow is galvanizing voters in Colorado with his reform-focused campaign. End Citizens United is proud to help shine a light on Mike Coffman’s record and inform voters about Jason Crow’s pledge to reject corporate PAC money.”
Normington Petts surveyed 400 likely voters in CO-06 from September 18-23. The margin of error is +/- 4.9%.
