64% of Iowa Democratic caucus goers, including 44% of Biden supporters, say they’re less likely to support a candidate with a single-candidate super PAC
Washington, DC — A new poll of Iowa Democratic caucus goers, commissioned by End Citizens United (ECU) and conducted by Public Policy Polling (PPP), shows that Democrats in Iowa are less likely to support a candidate who welcomes the help of a single-candidate super PAC. Click here to see the poll.
The poll found that 64 percent of caucus goers, including 44 percent of Biden supporters, are less likely to caucus for a candidate who welcomes help from a super PAC. Additionally, 58 percent believe the first priority of the next president should be cracking down on corruption and getting big money out of politics. 62 percent of caucus goers said enacting sweeping anti-corruption legislation was “very important” to them, which ranks second only to enacting gun safety legislation.
“The key to winning for any candidate is to show voters you’re on their side. As Vice President Biden has said, how can middle-class families trust you if you have your own super PAC,” said Tiffany Muller, president of End Citizens United. “This clearly matters to voters, and these results spell trouble for any presidential candidate who has welcomed the support of a super PAC. The Democratic primary should be about generating real grassroots enthusiasm and support, not about who the wealthy donors and special interests want in the White House.”
PPP surveyed 715 likely Democratic caucus goers on landlines and cell phones from November 5-6, 2019.
ECU and its four million members have played a central role in making anti-corruption and government reform a top issue in the Democratic presidential primary. The group is helping candidates use the issue to win over voters and beat President Trump in 2020. Earlier this year, ECU led a coalition of groups in sending an open letter to the 2020 Democratic candidates for president urging them “to declare that you oppose single-candidate super PACs in the Democratic presidential primary – and will publicly and privately demand that any super PAC designed to support your primary campaign be shut down.”
