O’Rourke continues to gain momentum as name ID grows
Washington, D.C. — A new poll of likely voters in Texas, commissioned by End Citizens United (ECU) and conducted by PPP, shows that Beto O’Rourke continues to close the gap on Senator Ted Cruz. The poll shows O’Rourke trailing Cruz by only four points, 42-46. Notably, O’Rourke took the lead when voters learned about his decision to reject PAC money, 46-43.
ECU has been tracking the Texas Senate race closely since January. Its first poll had O’Rourke within eight points of Cruz, 37-45 percent. In June, an ECU poll showed O’Rourke closing the gap to six points, 43-49 percent. The polling was conducted by PPP and Greenberg Quinlan Rosner, respectively.

“This is a race where we’ve seen an incredible amount of movement – and the momentum is entirely in Beto’s favor,” said Tiffany Muller, president of End Citizens United. “Senator Cruz’s record of serving special interests juxtaposed with Beto’s refusal to take a dime of PAC money is the clearest example of how money-in-politics is defining this race. These numbers spell trouble for Cruz.”
PPP surveyed 797 Texas voters from August 1-2. The margin of error is +/- 3.5%.
Beto O’Rourke was the first challenger ECU endorsed in the 2018 midterms based on his record of fighting for reform and his decision to reject all PAC money. ECU’s grassroots members have donated over $235,000 to O’Rourke’s campaign, averaging just $10 per contribution. Beto is one of only a handful of members of Congress to reject PAC money, a decision that has made him a leader of a growing trend, with over 170 candidates this cycle rejecting money from corporate PACs. Beto’s reform platform draws a sharp contrast with Ted Cruz, who has allied himself with big-money special interests and mega-donors and was named to ECU’s Big Money 20.
