In the wake of the racist, hate driven shooting in Buffalo, the U.S. Senate attempted to debate a bill to allow the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security to better investigate and prosecute domestic terrorism, which has been driven by gun violence, particularly coming from white supremacists and neo-Nazi groups.
Despite the pain and horror that the American people are suffering, Senate Republicans, including Senator Ron Johnson, blocked the bill.
Instead of standing up to extremism, keeping our communities safe, and protecting our kids from hateful ideology and violent crime, Senator Johnson sided with the radical gun lobby and their hundreds of millions of dollars in lobbying and political spending by voting against this common sense bill to keep Americans safe. Since Citizens United, big money gun groups have spent over $302 million to block widely popular gun violence prevention measures. The NRA alone has given over $1.2 million to Senator Johnson.
“Senator Johnson’s actions today are despicable. Instead of taking on the deadly tirade of violence that has erupted from hateful ideologies, Johnson stood with wealthy and powerful lobbyists whose sole goal is to line their own pockets and pad the bank accounts of rich gun industry executives,” said End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller. “This November, we’ll hold corrupt politician Ron Johnson accountable for putting radical ideology and corporate interests above the lives of our neighbors and families by replacing him with Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes.”
