The For the People Act Would Fight Back Against New Voter Suppression Laws In Montana

Apr 20, 2021

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement after Republican Governor Greg Gianforte yesterday signed two voter suppression bills, Senate Bill 169 and House Bill 176, which would increase voter ID requirements and end same-day registration in Montana, respectively:

“Make no mistake: Senate Bill 169 and House Bill 176 are aimed at taking away Montanans’ freedom to vote. They are part of a dark money backed and coordinated nationwide power grab to keep the deck stacked for corporate special interests and big money donors. These new laws, and the more than 361 bills introduced in 47 different states, underscore the urgent need for the Senate to swiftly pass the For the People Act (S.1, H.R.1).

“This critical reform bill will fight back against dark money backed bills putting up barriers to voting. It will protect all Montanans’ freedom to vote and ensure we have safe, accurate, accessible elections; end dark money; and crack down on political corruption in both parties. Our democracy works best when everyone’s voice is heard. The For the People Act will restore the freedom to vote that Governor Gianforte and Montana Republicans are trying to shamefully take away from Montanans.”
