End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President TIffany Muller released the following statement after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that he will work to change Senate rules if necessary to proceed with voting rights legislation as early as the first week of January:
“We thank Leader Schumer for his commitment to this issue. It is imperative that the Senate adhere to his timeline to protect the voice and vote of every American and the foundations of our democracy.
“The Senate needs to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in order to prevent Republicans from successfully rigging the rules to steal the 2022 elections and beyond. Republicans have spent the last year working with dark money groups to put in place the pieces to sabotage and overturn elections, restrict the freedom to vote, gerrymander away fair representation, and block every attempt by Democrats to protect access to the ballot box and empower voters. Leader Schumer has said the Senate will take up voting rights legislation–as well as changes to the process to ensure this legislation has an opportunity to pass–as early as the first week when the Senate returns in January.
“The success of our democracy is at stake and the White House and every Democrat in the Senate must consider this urgency when working on these bills and their path forward.”
