End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller released the following statement after Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed SB1 into law, Texas’ new, dangerous anti-voter legislation:
“Like the new abortion law, Texas’ new voting law is as shameful as it is un-American. In a state that is already among the most difficult places to vote, Governor Abbott, Texas Republicans, and their dark money allies have passed one of the most egregious, anti-American voting restriction bills in the country. The bill eliminates widely used ways to cast a ballot like drive-in and 24-hour voting; imposes new, complicated restrictions on absentee voting; makes it more difficult to educate the people of Texas on how to vote; gives partisan poll-watchers the authority to intimidate voters; and imposes harsh penalties for the patriotic citizens who work tirelessly to run Texas elections.
“This unmitigated assault on our freedom to vote must be countered by the U.S. Senate with the For the People Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. The Senate must pass these bills quickly and not allow procedure to stand in the way of protecting the freedom to vote from dangerous laws like the one just signed in Texas.”
