ECU Statement on House Passage of Measures to Weaken Campaign Finance Protections

Sep 15, 2017

Provisions would reduce transparency and oversight, and allow Big Money special interests to manipulate churches

ECU urges Senate to reject measures

End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the House of Representative’s passage of several measures to weaken campaign finance protections. The provisions were inserted into spending bills.

“Everyday American families feel the pain created by the outsized influence that special interests have in politics and government. Whether it’s the costs of health care, education or stagnant wages, Americans are feeling the pinch. They want their representatives to put their interests first. Instead, politicians who are bought and sold by the special interests continue to do the bidding of their campaign donors. These measures, forced through the House by Republicans, do nothing more than give Big Money more power and influence. They allow mega-donors and corporate special interests to avoid disclosure and even use churches as tax-free tools to funnel secret money in political elections. We urge the Senate to reject these measures from the spending bills.”
