Poll Also Finds Strong Support for Candidates Who Take Up the Mantle of Reform with 66% More Likely to Support a Candidate Who Refuses Corporate Money
Washington, D.C. – A new poll of likely voters commissioned by End Citizens United (ECU) and conducted by PPP shows Katie Porter, candidate for California’s 45th Congressional district, leading incumbent Congresswoman Mimi Walters by three points, 46 to 43 percent.
The poll also found strong support for Katie Porter’s commitment to reject corporate PAC money, with 66% of voters more likely to support a candidate who will not accept money from corporate special interests. In the poll, after voters learned of Porter’s commitment to reject corporate PAC money, her lead over Congresswoman Walters grows to 14 points.
Most notably, among independent voters, Porter saw strong support with a 21 point advantage over Walters, a number that grew to a 37 point margin after voters learned of Porter’s rejection of corporate PAC money. The findings are in line with ECU’s own national polling that shows independent voters rank reducing the role of special interests as one of the most important priorities and second only to national security.
“Voters want representatives who put their interests ahead of the special interests, and they’re tired of politicians like Representative Walters who are in the pockets of big donors,” said Tiffany Muller, president of End Citizens United. “Katie Porter offers voters a chance to elect a real reformer who has spent her life fighting for families against powerful interests. Her commitment to reject money from Big Banks and corporate PACs earns her trust from voters that will help her win this election.”
In December, ECU named Congresswoman Mimi Walters to its Big Money 20 targets, a list of some of the worst politicians in Congress who do the bidding of the special interests while voting to keep the rigged system in place.

PPP surveyed 599 likely voters from May 10-12. The margin of error is +/- 4.0%.
The poll comes on the heels of EMILY’s List and ECU’s joint six-figure direct mail and digital advertising program in early May. This week, ECU President Tiffany Muller will also be campaigning with Katie Porter.
