On January 18, after a series of Santos scandals and lies came to light, End Citizens United (ECU) wrote a letter calling on Representative Nick LaLota to donate the $2,900 in tainted campaign cash he took from Santos to charity.
In the six weeks since ECU wrote the letter, the following additional Santos scandals have surfaced:
- January 31: ECU filed an FEC complaint against Santos for raising and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a recount that never happened
- February 1: The FBI started to investigate whether Santos profited off a GoFundMe scheme using a disabled veteran’s dying service dog to raise funds
- February 9: The SEC began an investigation into Santos’ involvement with the Harbor City Capital ponzi scheme
- February 15: ECU filed an FEC complaint against Santos after one of his staffers posed as a top aide to Kevin McCarthy in order to raise campaign funds
- March 2: House Ethics Committee opened an investigation into George Santos
End Citizens United has repeatedly called on Rep. LaLota to donate the money to charity given the embarrassing and deceitful scandals surrounding Santos and the likely illegality of that money. Rep. LaLota has also dodged reporter inquiries about the money.
